My mother was telling this story last night. I thought to post it here because I love it very much. It is all about how compassion and sacrifice makes someone great. The story follows as-
Once upon a time there was a great forest known as Champaka in India. There lived many wild animals and birds. They were not at all inimical towards one another; rather they were very much friends and they loved the feeling of togetherness. Lion was the king of the forest. He was a very fun loving and nice king. Once he invited all the animals and birds to participate in a feast arranged by him. Also he requested all of them to cooperate in the event. All the animals and birds became very happy and they started working in arrangements of the grand event of lion king. At last the feast was made very successful. Everyone present there was enjoying various royal cuisine and was singing, dancing and gossiping. At the mid of night, the party was over. By getting very tired all the wild creatures went their respective homes. After their departure, lion king's house looked very untidy and ugly. Dirty utensils were lying here and there. When lion king came to know that no animals were present there to make things in order, he felt very bad and got furious. Soon he howled- "How selfish my subjects are to leave my home so untidy...! I would slay one by one tomorrow morning.
At once a tiny rabbit appeared from within a bush. He tried to pacify the anger of lion king. He apologized for everything and begged for the life of other wild creatures before the lion king. He assured the lion king to clean the untidy place and keep everything in order before sunrise. Lion king went to sleep. The rabbit worked very hard. He broomed and washed the place with water. He cleaned loads of dirty utensils and kept everything in order. At the end the rabbit was tired enough to move his body anymore. Suddenly he fell down being unconscious. It was about to be dawn when in the sky there was only moon and a twinkling little star watching at the rabbit. Moon felt very pity on the rabbit and slowly stretched his white hand towards the rabbit. The moon lifted the poor unconscious creature, hugged and loved until he vanished from the sky with arrival of sun. Since then the tiny rabbit got a permanent place in the heart of the moon.
